Once asked why such strange and endearing music originates from Ohio, Lux Interior suggested that “It’s the asshole of the Earth, the kids know there is no way out and they don’t listen to ANYONE!”1 The unforgiving Midwest winter, ideal for basement recording, general wood- shedding and mental illness, is followed by a raging, Dionysian spring when all the confined freak energy spills forth and clogs the gutters of a house built long, long ago. Let a hundred flowers bloom! Vernacular Splatter is the product of both this cycle of suffering and euphoria and the unending deluge of bad vibes that characterized the preceding year. More exorcism than polite séance, these songs a priestess of Apollo opening your veins with an obsidian blade while asking the never self-evident question, are you even alive? Big Beats detonate and tumble forth like volcanic debris while lascivious guitars imitate the Doppler effect of passing sirens. Celine’s voice is both mournful and righteous, burning white-hot like the ultimate rustbelt Cassandra warning of impending doom. Six songs scattered like Sacred Rats among the vast trash boat of mediocrity.

Someone once asked: “I wonder how far out we can take this rock n’ roll thing? How close can guitars bring us to God?”
High Rise answers that question here, on their masterpiece Adam Lehrer/Safety Propganda
